Herbert Milton Adams, Jr.





Herbert Milton Adams, Jr. passed away Sunday, March 29th at Hill Country Memorial Hospital at the age of 85. 


Herb was born October 16, 1929 to Herbert Milton Adams, Sr. & Florence Mina Hulda Durst Adams in San Antonio, TX. 

Herb graduated from Boerne High School in 1948. He also graduated from California State University, San Bernardino, with a Master’s degree in Special Education; Pomona College with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, & Chaffey College with an Associate’s degree in Electronics. He married Peggy Jean Mize in 1950. They lived in San Antonio & had two children, Douglas Richard & Linda Annette before moving to Copperas Cove and eventually leaving Texas for New Mexico, Massachusetts,, & eventually California where their third child, William Mark was born. 

In addition to being a husband & raising 3 children, Herb had a busy life with multiple careers. He was a cowboy on a ranch, worked for the Southern Pacific railroad, served in the US Navy, was an electronics technician (even working on some of the components in the first manned moon missions), & was a teacher. He started the first program in California, at Chaffey College, for students with learning & physical disabilities. 

Herb & Peggy retired in Fredericksburg in 1997.


Herb was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Peggy Jean Mize Adams in 2013; his father, Herbert Milton Adams, Sr., in 1984; his mother, Florence Mina Hulda Durst Adams, in 1997, & his brother, Douglas Ray Adams, in 1952. 

Herb is survived by his children: Douglas Richard Adams of Rockport; Dr. Linda Annette Adams of San Diego, CA; Dr. William Mark Adams of Durham, NC; 2 grandchildren: Michael Jacob Adams, age 15, Kathryn Janel Adams, age 11, both in Durham, NC, & a sister: Barbara Jean Martin of San Antonio.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in Herb’s name to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, or the charity of one’s choice.
