Wonderful shift at work the night before so I was able to get a little rest, I left on time and made it home to slop the cats and then load up the truck, made sure everything was off that didn't need to be on for the next eleven days and The Fig and I were on our way by 0900. I made our first stop at Wal-mart in LaGrange because I needed a folding chair for camp and they had those that can hold up to 400 lbs at for less then $20.00. Got some other supplies and I was ready.
I continued down US 29 through West Point, Lanett, The Valley, and kept on it until I got to the north side of Opelika, Al. Here US 29 shares with I-85 and Interstates are not an option on this road trip so I went through Opelika and Auburn, (only got lost once) on the old US 29 route that went through town. I then passed through Tuskegee, Union Springs, ect... until I got to Andalusia, AL. There I hooked up with US 84 and started heading westward.
The drive on US 84 through Alabama was beautiful but that route intersected very few town along the way. Then I entered Mississippi. Mississippi has been making a grand effort to upgrade it's highway system. I seems like any National highway that runs through that state is going to be made into a four lane with a median and bypass any town. So, it was like driving on an interstate through Mississippi. I made it as far as about 15 miles outside of Natchez, MS. before I realize that I missed the entrance to the campsite I was looking for, (for some reason I don't get service in Mississippi so I couldn't use the GPS on my cell phone) and turned down a dirt road, Higginbothem, and found a service road into the trees that I stopped and walked down a bit. I make sure it wasn't someone's driveway and that it's been a while since it's been used and then found a spot to back the truck into and set up camp. It was a cold camp and by that time I was so tired that all I wanted to do was put the tent up, eat a couple of granola bars and go to sleep. Which is what I did.
