The Journey of twenty-two hundred miles begins with just a single step. Lao Tzu (paraphrased) This blog is mainly about my excursion upon the Appalachian Trail. This is a journey that has been 15 years in the planning stage and on March 20, 2022 it will see that plan being executed. To Kerrville and Beyond!

Well, part one of Project Surprise has been implemented.  For those of you that are wondering, "What the 'ell is he talkin' about" it's like this; I'm in Texas!
I need to make a surprise inspection of my mother and during the break between semesters I decided it was a good time.  I also thought that a surprise on my uncle Eddie would also be something he needed.  So, with my Auntie as a co-conspirator I planned out my trip.  Now, I'm not worried about Mother learning since she thinks a computer is Lord Foul's Bane and stayed away from them.
I arrived yesterday in San Antonio on Frontier Airline.  The round trip cost about $150 and that was because I sprung for the extra leg room but Frontier is the type of airline that tries to nickle and dime ya' ta' death.  There is no complementary drink or peanuts; it's $2.50.  They want to charge for carry-on.  I never could figure out if that charge was for extra carry on or for the one carry-on.  The question was never answer because I never asked.  When it came time to board I just walked up and handed the ticket in my left hand while I kept my carry-on low in my right hand.  Yeah, I know; that's underhanded...
Once at the San Antonio airport  I debarked and picked  up my rental.  I got a Chevy Sonic this time.  It's alright but I think I'll stick with the Sub SUV from now on.  Jumped on the I-410 looped and made my way over to I-10 west.  This is where the fun began.
When I still drove out here I discovered that if I went north on I-35 and caught I-20 in the south-east corner of Dallas that even though it was about a hundred miles more, it was a lot faster because I didn't have to put up with that Dab-blame Houston traffic.
That dab-blame Houston traffic has migrated to I-10 west of San Antonio. I believe that I could have kept on I-410 until US 90, gone to Hondo, caught TX 173 and made it it into Kerrville a lot faster.
What really grinded my gears was I fought that bumper to bumper for 20 miles until I get to a straightway that had two retaining walls and no emergency lanes.  Then we took off!!!  Slow as molasses until we get to the construction point then traffic could engage Warp Drive!!!
Go figure.
I made it to the house and Auntie saw me pull up and she kept hinting that there was some folks coming from the church to Uncle that evening.  Eddie came out  the door expecting so see someone else and there stood little ol' me.  We hugged and had our reunion and went inside where Auntie was.  Since he realized that she knew all along that I was coming he looked at here and with a grin from ear-to-ear called her a little devil.
Since I haven't had any supper yet; we left for one of the local places and I got my belly full.  We came home and I tried to keep my eyes open as long as I could but II soon had to give up.  So, it was off to bed.
I'm here until early Saturday morning and then I'm making my way over to Guadalupe Peak and if I don't scale it at lease make a good assault.  The plan is to get to the trail head at first light and then get that 3000 ft in a mile and a half ascension done before the heat sets in.
From there I'll head over to Odessa to visit Charles Leon.  On monday I'll be in San Angelo with Mother.  I'll stay with her until the following Monday and then I'll go back to Kerrville until Wednesday when I have to catch my flight back.
