The Grady Trip

The following is about the six day ordeal I went through in February.  I’ve copied Facebook post and did no editing of them except to place a colon between a person’s name and their comment.

Thursday February 20, 2014

Pray for my partner Charles he had a little misadventure on his scooter (pigglet) yesterday. From what's been pieced together on his way home from school he had a blow out and was throw from the bike. Heard county EMS came to the rescue and flew him to The Grady's where he is now for observation. Charles has a small head bleed, road rash, and doesn't remember a lot from the accident. Robbie went up last night to watch after him and we're fixing to head up in a few to get his stuff and check in on him. Hopefully his iPad isn't broke and he'll be able to update everyone later today. Thanks in advance.

Charles Boettcher
WEDNESDAY 2/19

I left school after a grueling session of notes taking and first stopped at the Wal-Mart in Roanoke to fuel then a stop at McDonalds for some groceries-down-the-throat. I remember pulling out of McDonald's and passing the school on HWY 22 in Roanoke and that's it.

I was found on HWY 34 in Ga ( 22 turns into 34 at the state line) face down in the roadway by a passer- byer. It as west of Glenn Rd before the comunity of Texas, a straight patch of road. Heard Co was the initiative on the scene and I seem to have an "impression" of a back of a unit but as a third person looking on (no, I don't want to hear any of that "out of body experience" crap; it was just how my brain processed the other then sight inputs it was getting. I do remember being loaded up on a bird for the flight into ATL and the flight crew talking to me me and telling me how much longer it was until arrival ( that was actual memory but seemed more dream like). Then I was taken down to the Marcus Trauma center (those memories were more of a nightmare) where it seemed that the biggest issue I had was having to scream for a nurse, the beds didn't have call buttons. The nurses were nice, once I could get ahold of them but they tended to be scarce. So, once I was release from the trauma center and sent to the ICU I remember looking around in the haul and exclaiming, "I know where I am at! I know this place... "

Now officially, the GSP said I had a blowout on my rear tire and I was thrown over the handlebars for about 100 ft. I had a 3/4 helm it on which bore the blunt of the trauma. The lens is toast and the helmet itself is badly banged up. I got a hematoma ( ie a large bruise) over the right eye and a frontal bone fracture. Since the bone didn't move the surgeons don't see any need for surgery. I got a CAT scan, not as good as the scan Notorious C.A.T. would have given me, around 18:30. At one time in the trauma center I released the C-Collar I was on because I was having anxiety because of it. When I released it I remember staying very still while assessing the pain in my neck and back. There was none so I removed it. I remember both nurses and doctors talking to me about the dangers of DCing my own c-collar and I reassuring them I was well aware of the dangers but there was no pain to my back or neck. The collar stayed off. I remember given an emesis bucket with a chuck in to and before pucking, something I never did, I pulled the chuck out held it over the split on my hematoma. Once I was transferred to ICU the chuck was taken away and a dressing was applied.

I had been asked repeatedly for contact numbers but I couldn't remember any and kept asking for my phone, which was left at the scene. Once in ICU and they quit fussing over me I was able to get to the bed phone and called directory assistance for my work branch in Stone Mountain who connected me to LaGrange. I first left a message with Robbie and then contacted David, who was the on duty supervisor, who also alerted everyone that needed to be. It wasn't too long before Robbie was up here and he sat beside me the night.

I'm getting tired and this pretty much covers Wednesday so I will stop here and post. I'll keep ya'll up to date later. Thanks to everyone fore their concern and support. Charles Boettcher
Thursday 2/21

I awoke and saw that Robbie was still with me. The staff came in and got some vitals, drew some blood, and gave me some little socking for my feet. I was told that it wouldn't be until 18:30 until my next CAT scan would be done and if I still had a bleed then they were going to have to operate to stop it.

The morning was pretty much busy with several phones calls and T.J. making a visit. After a while they both left.

Then Chuck and Tracy came in and brought my stuff from both Heard Co and the towing service. Everything was as much as I feared; jacket, shirt, pants, underclothes, cut and ruined. Well, they had to get my big-ol'-butt out of them somehow. Church did bring me my wookie satchel with my iPhone, iPad and charger. That put me back in business. I make sure that Chuck got my keys; he's to go and get piglet and bring it home.

Alter Chuck and Tracy left I took some time to catch up with Facebook. Chuck had already did a good job with the alerts that I just spent the time answering the concerns and well wishers.

I also got on canvas and contacted my biology instructor. He told me that I needed to take my time before coming back to class and that he would work with me on making sure I got my notes.

Around 18:30 we got a second cat scan done and returned to the room.

By 22:30 the results have been read and one doctor just needed to consult with another doctor before I was clear from NPO.

I've been without water long enough.

So, my little rebellious self starts to disconnects everything and I was going to make my way over to the sink. I got it all disconnected but made it as far as the foot of the bed before I realize how weak I was. The nurses came in and were none to happy with me as I was none to happy with them, but they got me hooked backed up, fussed at me a little bit then got my wornout self back into the bed properly. By this time I went right to sleep.

And so that ends the second day of my little misadventure.

Charles Boettcher: Robert, it as a 3/4 and I'm still not sure what happened. There was no witnesses and I was found face down in the road. The last I remember was about 1/2 hr beforehand. They said that the back tire blew and threw me but I am scepticable about that. The area of road was flat and straight and my max speed would have been only 45 mph.
