The Journey of twenty-two hundred miles begins with just a single step. Lao Tzu (paraphrased) This blog is mainly about my excursion upon the Appalachian Trail. This is a journey that has been 15 years in the planning stage and on March 20, 2022 it will see that plan being executed. Texas Bound

The last couple of days have been more of a whirlwind trying to get ready to leave. Man for those old days of when all I had to do was pack an overnight, but still I got ready and was able to leave on schedule. The shift before was light and I was able to get a small nap in, and was heading from LaGrange to Texas by 0700.

Everything went smooth and I stopped in Mobile to get gas and then I stopped in Pearl, MS at the Flying J's to get lunch. Their food quality has gone down a lot. The fried chicken tasted like that Banquet frozen box stuff. After I left the Flying J, that's when I ran into a storm that really didn't get out of it until Hammond, LA. Then from Hammond till the stateline it was hot.

At the stateline I got a call from Leslie. Pat was gone.

I knew that things was going to get accelerated when Leslie told me Sunday that the doctor okayed an increase in morphine but I was hopping that it would have been a little longer then 24 hours. Even if I had left within the hour of Leslie telling me of the increase I still wouldn't have been able to get there in time.

So, things changed. As tired as I was I decided to maybe when I pulled over for gas again to find a motel room and get some sleep. So, I continued on and made it through Houston in one piece and was dreading the stretch from hell to Katy. But the DOT had finally finished all that and I went from outright hatred of that stretch to downright animosity. Now if they could only get rid of the idiots that carouse that stretch then it would maybe become pleasant.

I stopped in Brookshire, TX. for gas and also ate at an Orlando's Pizza Buffet. Similar to the Ci-Ci's Pizza we have back home. I got my customary salad, five slices of pizza, (for my readers that are unfamiliar with these pizza buffets, they'll cut a median pizza into 16 slices so that the slices are half the normal size.) and then one slice of the "dessert" pizza. After eating I started looking for a motel and didn't find one in Brookshire. So I started heading west keeping my eyes peeled. Well, when I found one that might have been suitable, (i.e., cheep) I'd already passed it and was at the tired stage to where I didn't want to turn around and go back. Made it all the way to San Antonio like this.

Made it through San Antonio like this.

Castroville, only had the two motels, one is actually an inn, but I've always understood that those two wants your arm and a leg and a promissory note on your first born. It it was only a promissory note then that would have been acceptable but the arm and leg part would have put it a little steep.

So the next stop would have been Dunlay, but both Darrly and Robert was going to be there with Eddie and I knew that the best I could hope for was a pallet on the floor, I was just way too tired for a pallet, so I went to Hondo and stayed at the first hotel I came to.

Drugged my stuff in, went to sleep, got up and showered, made this entry, and am now getting ready for what the new day bring.
