Arson probed in five blazes

By Matt Chambers Staff writer

Troup County sheriff’s deputies are investigating possible arson in five predawn house fires in the Mountville area.

One house was occupied, but the others were not, officials said. There was no immediate word on any injuries or the extent of damage. Officials planned to give details late this morning.

Melody Swanson, a supervisor at the Troup County Emergency 911 Center, said house fires were reported at:
the 100 block of Big Springs-Mountville Road,
Greenville Road at Chipley-Mountville Road,
 Greenville Road at Fincher Street,
the 2500 block of Mountville-Hogansville Road and
the 1300 block of Hines Road.
The first three blazes were within about a mile of each other in Mountville. The other two were north of the town.
Units from the Troup County, LaGrange and Meriwether County fire departments responded to the blazes, which were reported about 3 a.m.
The sheriff’s office sent out an alert on the community advisory and alerts program Nixle at 4:57 a.m. asking residents to report any suspicious or unusual activity.
